Last month, I announced that I was using the $735 in my Substack earnings for this year to purchase the most premium carbon removal credit that I could find. This month, I announce the Everything and the Carbon Sink credit grading rubric, and a poll for paid subscribers to vote for their favorite supplier that submitted an application to the RFP.

Rubric

To judge each credit, I will give equal weight to the following factors, on a scale of 1-10:

  1. Delivery: probability that the credit will be delivered and verified within two years.

    1. Bonus points: physical delivery of credit is possible.

  2. Permanence x additionally: probability the removal wouldn’t have happened without the credit and that carbon stays removed from the atmosphere indefinitely.

  3. Scale potential x Lifecycle Carbon Accounting rigor: probability that the solution scales to meaningful levels for the climate in the future, adjusted for the rigor of the LCA today. This factor attempts to balance near-term innovation (and less net-removal today) with higher confidence / more comprehensive system boundaries on carbon accounting.

  4. AI assessment: What does Claude say, after reviewing resources for how to buy carbon removal credits well from Frontier, Carbon Direct/Microsoft, DOE (hard copy below), and CDR.FYI on how to buy high quality removal, compared to all publicly available information about these credit suppliers and their proposed solution pathways?
